Hit-and-run victim dies; police seek driver

YOUNGSTOWN — The victim of a hit-and-run incident on South Avenue has died, according to a police report.

Paul Larson, 52, of Campbell, was killed after being struck by two vehicles about 9:05 p.m. Tuesday. Larson was crossing South Avenue near Hilton Avenue and was hit by a white pickup truck traveling southbound. He was knocked to the ground and into the northbound lane, where he was hit by a second vehicle, the report said.

According to the report, witnesses saw the first vehicle do a U-turn and drive past the scene before fleeing. The second vehicle remained at the scene.

Witnesses described the pickup truck as possibly a four-door Ford F-250 with a black ladder in the bed. The driver’s side headlight was out, and there was about a footlong scratch on the driver’s side. The driver is believed to be a white male, and two passengers also were in the truck.

Park employees honored

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Senate honored three state parks employees from northeastern Ohio for their life-saving efforts during a windstorm last year.

Mike Grammer, assistant park manager at Mosquito Lake in Cortland, and Al Campana and Barb Neill, park employees at Lake Milton, received framed resolutions and a standing ovation by lawmakers before Wednesday’s floor debate on the state’s transportation budget.

Grammer, Campana and Neill were working Sept. 14 when the aftermath of Hurricane Ike swept across the state, bringing 40-50 mph winds and 4-6 foot waves on the two lakes, officials said.

Grammer rescued a distressed boater at Mosquito Lake, and Campana and Neill saved two others at Lake Milton. A third boater died in the latter incident.
