Mary Vallinger 12th in diving

MINNEAPOLIS, MN. — Mount Union College sophomore Mary Vallinger (Poland Seminary HS) finished 12th in the 3-meter diving competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Vallinger tallied 403.60 points and was only the second underclassman in the top 12.

She will compete in the 1-meter dive Friday, an event available on a LIVE web video broadcast.

A month ago, Vallinger claimed her second straight Ohio Athletic Conference diving titles and second-straight OAC Diver of the Year award.

Mathews gradudate Roscoe earns honor

PITTSBURGH — Carlow University junior guard Lauren Roscoe earned American Mideast Conference Honorable Mention for her performance during the 2008-09 basketball season.

Roscoe, a graduate of Mathews High School, averaged 12 points per game while starting at guard in all 26 Celtics games this season. She led the team in total rebounds (124), three-point field goal percentage (.340) and points (310). Roscoe was the top scorer in 13 of Carlow’s 26 games and set a team high with 23 points in a home game against Geneva in December. She ranked 10th in the American Mideast Conference in free throw percentage, converting 78 out of 100 chances (.780).

Bronze conference at Freeway Lanes

WARREN — A Bronze conference training program will be this weekend at Freeway Lanes, 2700 Parkman Rd.

Coaches attending will receive training that will prepare them to work with intermediate-level bowlers. It is also designed to supply individuals with the tools and information to pursue coaching as a profession.

Women’s senior bowling at Camelot

BOARDMAN — The 17th annual senior tournament of the Youngstown USBC Women’s Bowling Association will be held April 4-5.

Entry fee of $15 should be made payable to the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Senior Tournament and mailed before March 27 to Betty Kana, 2936 Eddie Street, Youngstown 44509.

Dodge sweeper

BOARDMAN — The Erv “Magic” Dodge Sweeper will be held at Boardman Lanes on March 21 at noon.

The event, open to men and women, comprises five games in two divisions. Handicap is based on 100 percent of 220.

The entry fee is $40. All proceeds benefit a memorial scholarship fund at YSU in the name of Erv “Magic” Dodge, the late local bowler and association officer who passed away April 11, 1999.

Women’s 9-pin no-tap event set

CANFIELD — The Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 10th annual 9-pin no-tap handicap tournament for women and men will be at Amron Lanes in April.

Entry fee per person is $16 ($64 per team) and should be mailed to the association office by April 14.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Roger Federer ran his record against Fernando Gonzalez to 12-1 with a three-set victory Wednesday and moved into the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open.
