Dear Heloise: When wrapping leftover cake, spray the plastic wrap with some nonstick cooking spray. The icing will stay on the cake and not on the wrap. It really works — try it! — Jean Merenda, Weirton, W.Va.

Dear Heloise: I was forever searching through plasticware trying to find the lid that matched a container. What a hassle! I decided to solve this problem once and for all. I simply coded the dishes using a permanent marker. For example, I wrote a number 7 on a container and a 7 on the matching lid. Elizabeth, San Antonio

Dear Heloise: I finally got around to creating a last-minute shopping list of ingredients needed for a half-dozen easy recipes. This way, I can pick up exactly what I need from the supermarket on my way home from work. No matter how many “staples” I have on hand, I always seemed to be missing an essential fresh ingredient that would slip my mind in the rush to get home. The list lives in my car’s glove compartment and has become a lifesaver. Michelle Braverman, Houston

Dear Heloise: The other day, I made pancakes and served up the first batch, and when I went to get the syrup, there wasn’t any. In fact, there wasn’t any jelly or anything. Oh, no — what to do? After searching the pantry, I found a can of apple-pie filling. Hmm ... I heated it up a little, and the kids just loved it! Now, once a month or so, we make pancakes and choose a pie-filling flavor. Delicious! Jolene, Springville, Utah
