Pet first-aid course offered at discount

STAFF REPORT

BOARDMAN — Throughout March, the American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, 8392 Tod Lane, is partnering with Angels for Animals for Red Cross Month in order to certify as many pet owners in the Mahoning Valley in pet first aid as possible.

This is an opportunity for you and your family to learn how to take care of your pets while having the opportunity to tour and educate yourself on the importance of rescue animals.

When you adopt a pet from Angels for Animals or from the Mahoning County dog warden this month, you will receive a coupon for a discounted pet first-aid course.

The coupon allows new pet owners to take the course at a discounted rate of $20 instead of the normal $34 rate.

Pet first aid is a 3 1‚Ñ2-hour course designed to help the typical dog or cat owner care for and protect their pet like any other special friend or family member.

At the end of the course, “companion” owners will be able to recognize animal health emergencies and react until veterinary help can be provided, identify minor injuries and care for them and know prevention and assessment skills.

Topics include scene safety, sick or injured animal behavior, normal vital signs, mucous membrane color, capillary refill time, care and treatment in poisoning, CPR and rescue breathing, choking maneuvers and bleeding control.

Classes are being offered from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 28.

Call the Mahoning Chapter at (330) 726-6063 to enroll.
