Officials delivering meals for elderly

STAFF REPORT

WARREN — Several Trumbull County mayors and a Brookfield Township trustee will be among hundreds of elected officials joining the fight to end senior-citizen hunger by delivering meals to homebound elderly people today.

Mayors Michael O’Brien of Warren, Ralph Infante of Niles, Curt Moll of Cortland, James Melfi of Girard and Glen Holmes of McDonald, plus Philip Schmidt, a Brookfield trustee, will participate in the Meals On Wheels program, called Mayors For Meals.

The event is hosted by Meals On Wheels Association of America, and it takes place every March as a public awareness campaign. All of the Trumbull participants are affiliated with Trumbull Mobile Meals.

“Many of our Meals On Wheels programs across the country are suffering in these difficult economic times, and for the mayors to show their support sends an important message to the public,” said Enid Borden, association president and CEO.

Launched in 2006 with 660 participating mayors, the program has grown each year, as mayors from small towns to large cities deliver. Prominent mayors recruited for this year’s event include those in Los Angeles; San Diego; Honolulu; St. Louis; Pittsburgh; Memphis, Tenn.; and Richmond, Va.
