Preakness Stakes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Senate President Mike Miller says the state could build a horse racing track and run the Preakness Stakes if its financially troubled owner decides to sell the Triple Crown race.

Miller says the name of the race has value, and he believes it would be treated separately from the two Maryland tracks owned by Magna Entertainment Corp. The Aurora, Ontario-based company filed this month for bankruptcy.

Miller says he believes Magna Entertainment would set a price on the Preakness and it would have to give the state the first option to purchase the race.
