Mahoning Valley Classic
AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning County MRDD Red team defeated the Mahoning County Public JV team 65-57 in overtime in the championship game of the of the Mahoning Valley Classic Basketball tournament,
The game was played at Leonard Kirtz School in celebration of MRDD Awareness Month.
Niles QB Brogdon-Hill to play at Mount Union
ALLIANCE — Niles High School senior Morgan Brogdon-Hill has committed to attend Mount Union College and play on the football team.
Brogdon-Hill is a 6-2, 175-pound quarterback.
Mount Union College went 15-0 and won a record 10th NCAA Division III National Championship in 2008.
Pair join Raiders
ALLIANCE — Walsh Jesuit High School senior Anthony “AJ” Rosati has committed to attend Mount Union College and participate on the football team.
Rosati, a 6-0, 255-pound defensive tackle, was an All-District, Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Also, Louisville quarterback Neal Seaman will play at Mount. Seaman is a 6-1, 205-pound quarterback who was an All-Ohio selection and was the Div. II Co-Offensive Player of Year.
He also was WHBC Player of the Year, North East Inland Offensive Player of the Year, Canton Repository Player of the Week and Team MVP.
Miller judges two bouts in England
MINERAL RIDGE — Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a boxing judge in Manchester, England last week.
Miller judged the WBO Cruiserweight title fight as Ola Afolabi of the U.S. beat Enzo Maccarinelli of England.
This week, Miller leaves for Dublin, Ireland for his next assignment: another title bout for the WBA Super Bantamweight title between champion Ricardo Cordoba of Panama and Bernard Dunne of Ireland.
Area athletes earn All-America
BOSTON — Boardman seniors Corey Linsley and Caleb Matthews earned Nike All-American status at last weekend’s Nike Indoor National Track & Field Championships in Boston.
Linsley placed third in the shot put with a toss of 60 feet, 6 inches.
Matthews placed fifth in the pentathlon with a total of 3,497 points. The pentathlon is a multi-event performance featuring the high jump, long jump, high hurdles, shot put, and 1,000-meter run.
Canfield’s Dustin Brode finished 14th in the shot put at 54-61‚Ñ2 and 21st in the weight throw at 57-81‚Ñ2.
Boardman’s Alex Lipinsky placed 30th in the weight throw at 53-61‚Ñ4 and Linsley was 35th at 51-73‚Ñ4.
Douglass named POTW
AUSTINTOWN — Mount Union College senior Leslie Douglass was named Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Douglass is perfect 5-0 in singles play this spring including going 4-0 in matches last week in Hilton Head, SC. She also is undefeated at No. 2 doubles with partner Mary-Catherine Beck.
The Raiders are 6-2 overall on the season and have won five straight matches.
Mill Creek North Course opens today
BOARDMAN — The North golf course at Mill Creek MetroParks opened for play this morning.
All 18 holes are open on the course which is located on West Golf Drive, just off Route 224.

Arena Football update
NEW YORK — Arena Football players and management have reached agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, paving the way for the league to restart play next year.
Both the players’ union and the league’s board must ratify the deal, which would cover four seasons from 2010 through 2013.
AFL acting commissioner Ed Policy called the agreement crucial to bringing back the indoor football league.
US women’s soccer team to play Japan
CHICAGO — The U.S. women’s soccer team will open its 2009 domestic schedule on May 20 with a match against Japan in Frisco, Texas.
The U.S. Soccer Federation said Monday that the U.S. will also host Japan on May 23 in Sandy, Utah, as part of the two-game series.
The federation says the Texas game will be the first meeting between the countries since the 2008 Olympic semifinal, which the U.S. won 4-2 in Beijing.
Mackey out front
UNALAKLEET, Alaska — Two-time defending champion Lance Mackey was the picture of cool confidence arriving first in the town of Unalakleet.
However, four mushers — including two former champions — were trying to catch Mackey on the coast and keep him from a third straight victory.
