Wood pitches scoreless inning, but Indians lose
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Kerry Wood worked one scoreless inning for Cleveland before the Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the eighth inning off Kirk Saarloos to defeat the Indians 6-3 on Sunday.
Casey McGehee hit a two-run homer and minor-leaguer Carlos Corporan a two-run double in Milwaukee’s rally. Earlier, the Brewers’ Prince Fielder and Cleveland’s Kelly Shoppach each hit their third spring homers.
Wood, signed to a two-year, $20.5 million contract as Cleveland’s closer, allowed one hit in his second spring outing.
“I felt good, strong,” said Wood, who was sidelined early in camp by a sore back. “I threw fastballs, one curve and two sliders, but no cutters. The inning before was a long one, so I threw about 50 pitches in the bullpen and got plenty of work.”
Wood, who made 12 trips to the disabled list in 10 years with the Chicago Cubs, said his back is not an issue and he anticipates being ready for the season opener.
Scott Lewis, one of five lefties seeking the fifth spot in Cleveland’s rotation, allowed three hits and one run over the first four innings.
Grady Sizemore tripled with one out in the Indians’ third and scored on a single by Jamey Carroll.
Pirates 7, Rays 7
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Pedro Alvarez showed off his power, and Tom Gorzelanny made another bid for a spot in Pittsburgh’s rotation.
Picked second overall in last year’s draft, Alvarez hit a long homer in the ninth inning Sunday that helped the Pirates rally for a 7-7 tie with Tampa Bay in 11 innings.
Alvarez’s three-run shot traveled nearly 450 feet to center field.
After Alvarez’s homer pulled Pittsburgh within a run, Garrett Jones connected off Joe Nelson to tie it.
Gorzelanny allowed two runs and five hits in three innings during his fourth spring training start. The left-hander is trying to become the Pirates’ fifth starter this season.
“I’m sure they’re starting to narrow down their decisions here in the next couple of weeks, but you go to the end,” he said. “I have to focus on being out there, pitching well, continuing to improve and getting ready for the season. It’ll get me to where I want to be and where I need to be.”
