Little Falcons need support
Fanfare:
I am writing to inform the people of Austintown of a local group that needs their help.
The Austintown Little Falcons youth football program has been a part of this community since Jim Calhoun first laced up the cleats in 1969.
Since that day 40 years ago, the Little Falcons have been supported by the fundraisers that the players, cheerleaders, coaches, parents, and the community of Austintown have participated in and that continue to this day.
The time has come again for the players’ and cheerleaders’ equipment to be updated. One former member of the Little Falcons organization cares enough about the future of the children of the Little Falcons to form an alumni group.
I can proudly say that I was a Little Falcon football player, and I will most assuredly be giving of myself to help the Little Falcons organization. All that I am asking is you do the same.
The alumni group will meet a few times a year to discuss and develop ways to generate the support needed to keep the kids safe while participating in a sport that they love. We are calling on any past and present players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff, parents, or anyone else who is interested in helping.
A 40-year old Austintown tradition needs your support. Sign up with the Little Falcons alumni and see how little it takes to help the children enjoy what so many have come to cherish.
To receive information on joining the alumni group you can e-mail your request to: littlefalcons@gmail.com.

YCS creates pride with district title
Fanfare:
Winning the district title is a great accomplishment for any school, but for Youngstown Christian it means a little more. For the first time, the Eagles have created a buzz and an electricity of excitement in, not only the school, but the Valley.
Up until 2004, a district title would have been impossible since the school was not a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. However, the school made the transition and by doing so it’s seen its fair share of struggles in athletics.
That’s why it was such a great feeling to witness the Eagles cutting down the nets Friday after defeating McDonald to win the first district title in school history.
With the game being aired on MyYTV as the “Game of the Week,” Eagles fans were in full support with the student section being decked out in all white. For a small school, the student section and fans in attendance can rival any school in the area with the noise and enthusiasm they displayed.
The game was a hard fought battle, and I give much credit to McDonald and the relentless effort they had in mounting a comeback, but it was the Eagles’ night. The players played their hearts out and didn’t back down on the big stage. In addition, the school is fortunate to have one of the best coaches in the area in Dolph Carroll.
Whether or not the Eagles can make it to the state tournament still remains to be seen, but it was long overdue that YCS finally got its moment in the spotlight, and they did not disappoint.
