According to Carol Willsey Bell, a local genealogist, many genealogical sources may be found in courthouses, including birth and death records along with wills and estate records.
U.S. Federal Census Records began in 1790 and were taken every 10 years; they reveal the names of people in a family unit along with ages, birthplaces and occupations.
“Church records are also a valuable source if the denomination is known and may provide a gold mine of data,” said Bell.
