BEST BETS Cleveland film festival
Here are some “Best Bets” from this year’s slate of films at the Cleveland International Film Festival:
ALEXANDER THE LASTSFlbProduced by Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale,” “Margot at the Wedding”), this “sensual and intimate” portrait of a young married couple is a breakthrough film by Mumblecore phenom Joe Swanberg (“Hannah Takes the Stairs,” “LOL”).
LA BELLE PERSONNESFlbBased on the novel “La Princesse de Cleves,” Christophe (“Love Songs,” “Dan Paris”) Honore’s new film transposes the machinations and hothouse atmosphere of the 17th-century French court to a 21st-century high school.
THE CHASER
Taut South Korean psychological thriller about a detective-turned-pimp who becomes embroiled in a serial murder investigation. An American remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio is reputedly in the works.
GOMORRAH
The Grand Prix winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Matteo Garrone’s adaptation of Roberto Saviano’s international best-seller is a no-holds-barred expos of the Camorra, Italy’s most notorious organized crime cartel.
IL DIVO
Based on the life of Giulio Andreotti — the Christian Democratic politician who was elected to the Italian parliament seven times — Paolo Sorrentino’s epic takes an unflattering look at the tumultuous political history of post-war Italy. Winner of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize.
MOON
A thinking man’s sci-fi flick about the lone inhabitant of a lunar mining base (indie stalwart Sam Rockwell) whose mind begins playing tricks on him. Described as a cross between “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” this upcoming Sony Classics release was directed by Wooster college alum Duncan Jones (aka rock icon David Bowie’s son).
NIGHT AND DAY
Set in Paris, the latest film by South Korean critics’ darling Hong Sang-soo (“Woman on the Beach,” “Turning Gate”) is a typically droll and languorously paced examination of male-female relations.
RUDO Y CURSI
“Y Tu Mama Tambien” stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luno reunite for this raucous Mexican buddy comedy about professional soccer and the perils of fame. It also marks the filmmaking debut of screenwriter Carlos Cuaron, brother of “Y Tu Mama” director Alfonso Cuaron.
SUGAR
The second feature from writer-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (“Half-Nelson”) tells the story of a guileless Dominican teenager who gets recruited to play baseball for a minor league team in rural Iowa.
TOKYO!
Three wildly iconoclastic directors — Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), Bong Joon-ho (“The Host”); and Leos Carax (“Lovers on the Bridge”) — offer their unique perspective on modern-day Tokyo in this wiggy anthology of short films.
TYSON
Ex-pugilist Mike Tyson executive produced this warts-and-all docu-bio about his troubled life and times. Helmed by the equally contentious cult director James Toback (“Fingers,” “Black and White”), this rattled quite a few cages at the Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals.
