New Castle eligible for federal aid
STAFF REPORT
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city is eligible for $122,717 in federal stimulus money for the police department, said state Rep. Chris Sainato of New Castle, D-9th.
The Justice Assistance Grant, from the U.S. Department of Justice, will help pay for a wide range of department expenses, Sainato said.
The funding is authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The stimulus package includes almost $2 billion in resources for state and local law enforcement and other criminal justice activities through the Recovery JAG program.
Sainato said officials in eligible municipalities must apply for the federal stimulus funding.
Sainato said the JAG program does not require a local share and can be used for law enforcement, prosecution and court expenses, crime prevention and education, corrections, drug treatment, technology improvement, and crime victim and witness programs.
Police Chief Tom Sansone was not available Friday to comment.
Applications must be submitted by May 18.
