STEEL SWARF

STEEL SWARF

What is it?

Steel swarf is shavings produced in a steel machining operation that turn into a powdery and oily substance.

It can ignite upon exposure to air and may react with water to produce flammable hydrogen gas.

It may react violently or explosively on contact with water. It may be ignited by friction, heat, sparks or flames. Dusts or fumes may form explosive mixtures in air. Containers may explode when heated.

Oxides from metallic fires are a severe health hazard. Inhalation or contact with the substance may cause severe injury or death. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
