Amid reports that Kelly Pavlik will make a middleweight title defense against Sergio Mora this summer in Atlantic City, Pavlik's manager, Cameron Dunkin, cautioned, "there's nothing done yet."
Speaking by phone this morning, Dunkin was cautiously optimistic that the fight would get done, but emphasized that he hasn't talked to Pavlik or Pavlik's father and co-manager, Mike Sr.
"I hate to say that it's done because I don't think it is," Dunkin said.
Mora, who won the first season of "The Contender," is not likely to excite fight fans. The 28-year-old is coming off a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision loss to Vernon Forrest in a 154-pound WBC light middleweight title fight in September. But talks with IBF champion Arthur Abraham and WBA champion Felix Sturm have gone nowhere since both German fighters want too much money to fight in America, Dunkin said.
"You want to date the girl, well she's got to make an effort too," he said.
Dunkin expects the Mora-Pavlik fight to be finalized for a late June or July date at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. Although there had been talk of putting Pavlik's next fight in Cleveland, Dunkin said the Atlantic City people made a very strong offer to secure the fight.
