Comedian will banish the 'blue state' blues
By John Benson
Making people’s faces and stomachs hurt from laughing so hard is what comedian Steve Wilson is guaranteeing for those who attend his upcoming Youngstown area debut Friday and Saturday at Wildcat’s Comedy Club.
“Right now I’m heavy into politics,” said Wilson, calling from Columbus. “I found out that Ohio is a blue state for the first time in a long time, and I tell people I’m more of an independent. I vote for who is going to hurt me the least. And it turned out this past year the Democrats were the ones that were going to hurt me the least.
“So I just breakdown the whole thing on why Republicans lost. Obviously the Republicans are better politicians. It’s just unfortunately they had a blank check and they got carried away. The Democrats didn’t have to do anything. All they had to do is show up to win because the Republicans messed up so bad.”
Wilson said his set is broken down between talking politics, observational comedy and real life situations that define who he is as a person and funnyman.
“I tell people you’ll want to see my show if you’ve ever been in a bad relationship, if you’re in a bad relationship now, ever hated the people you worked with, just lost your job and ever voted,” Wilson said. “Basically anything that’s going on in your life right now, if you come to see my show for one hour, you’ll get it out of your mind.”
Something that Wilson initially was trying to get out of his mind was a bizarre relationship he had a few years ago with a girl from Columbus. However, he co-wrote a movie script about his experiences with the idea of someday bringing it to the silver screen.
“It’s like the worst story,” Wilson said. “I met a girl when I was opening up for Brian McKnight. It was supposed to be a one-night stand, but we ended up keeping in touch with each other, and I actually fell in love with her. I moved her to Buffalo. And the day she got to Buffalo, I found out she had three felonies and wasn’t supposed to leave the state of Ohio.
“She was an ex-prostitute and ex-drug dealer. It was the worst thing ever because I was in love with her. I had to break up with her, get her out of my house.”
So does Wilson still make friendly with the ladies after his shows?
“Oh no, I’m going right back to my room,” Wilson said.
Hmm, that means the fine ladies of Youngstown shouldn’t even bother attempting to catch his eye?
“Single ladies can still try,” Wilson laughed. “I’m not above giving you a shot, but if you have anything like my past story, stay away from me.”
