Baseball falls, 6-5

HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison’s David Herbek hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to lift the Dukes to a 6-5 win over YSU.

Herbek’s game-winner came after YSU scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead.

John Koehnlein had three hits while David Leon, Jacke Healey and Anthony Porter had two apiece for YSU. Healey hit the single that put YSU ahead in the ninth. Those four players accounted for nine of YSU’s 11 hits.

YSU junior Corey Vukovic threw well in his first start of the season, allowing three earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. Phil Klein threw a scoreless eighth, and Anthony Munoz was charged with the loss by giving up the two runs in the ninth.

NAHL jersey auction

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Phantoms have opened their second online jersey pre-auction of the season, that of their special edition St. Patrick’s Day uniforms.

The jerseys are part of the Phantoms’ yearly tradition of the St. Patrick’s Day game, which falls directly on the March 17th holiday next week. Fans can bid right now on the uniforms before they go on live auction following the Tuesday contest with Team USA at the Chevrolet Centre.

Sales garners honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Slippery Rock Univ. senior post player Sasha Sales was named to second-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division honors in voting by the division’s head coaches.

Sales, a 5-foot-9 native of Cleveland, was The Rock’s leading rebounder (8.4 per game) and second leading scorer (10.8 points per game) this winter.

The Rock finished 11-16.

Basketball fundraiser

NORTH LIMA — A basketball fundraiser will be played at South Range High School on March 27, beginning at 7 p.m.

The game will send Beaver Township police against Beaver Township firemen.

AUSTINTOWN — An amateur boxing card, called the “War at the Wedge” will be held at the Wedge Night Club on March 14.

McDonald’s prep stars

COLUMBUS — The McDonald’s All-American high school basketball games are coming to Ohio’s capital city.

The games’ namesake corporation announced Tuesday that the 2010 games will be played at Ohio State University’s Value City Arena in Columbus.

The games, featuring the top boys and girls players in the country, will be played March 31, 2010.

Each year 24 boys and 24 girls are selected from a pool of more than 2,500 nominees nationwide.

Tire-chasing crew member suspended

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The crew member who chased a tire across pit road, forcing NASCAR to throw a race-changing caution at Atlanta Motor Speedway, was suspended four races on Tuesday.

Jimmy Watts, the gas man for Marcos Ambrose’s crew, was also placed on probation through the end of the year. Frank Kerr, the crew chief for the No. 47 Toyota, was also placed on probation because NASCAR deemed him responsible for the actions of the team.

Neither NASCAR or JTG Daughtery Racing, which owns Ambrose’s team, commented on the incident.

Bacardi Cup Regatta

MIAMI — Mark Mendelblatt, the 2005 Bacardi Cup champion and America’s Cup tactician, and crew Bruno Prada of Brazil finished first in day three of sailing at the Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta on Biscayne Bay.

Tuesday’s win moved them up six slots to third overall.

Bermuda’s Peter Bromby and crew Magnus Liljedahl, who were in the top five in a fleet of 62 boats for the entire race Tuesday, took second place and maintained first place overall after three of six races.

Paris-Nice cycling

VICHY, France — Sylvain Chavanel of France won a final sprint to take the third stage of the Paris-Nice race Tuesday and capture the yellow jersey.

He came from behind to beat Juan Antonio Flecha of Spain in the closing yards, completing the 111-mile stage in 4 hours, 33 minutes, 12 seconds. Alberto Contador finished in the pack, 1:09 behind Chavanel.

“Chavanel has now a one-minute (lead), (Juan Manuel) Garate 30 seconds,” Contador told the Astana team’s Web site. “It can be complicated, but we still have five difficult days to go. It could have been worse.”
