Organizations take part in challenge

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Two area organizations that feed people are participating in the Feinstein Foundation challenge, which offers matching funds to hunger-fighting organizations for donations and pledges made in March and April.

The Youngstown District Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society has seen an increase in those needing food and an increase in those seeking to help.

Also participating in the Feinstein challenge is the Newton Falls Community Food Pantry, 261‚Ñ2 W. Broad St., Newton Falls. Donations will be accepted there.

The Feinstein Foundation, a national organization founded by Alan Shawn Feinstein, a philanthropist from Rhode Island, challenges residents to donate to organizations that help fight hunger. Donations of food items valued at a dollar per item or per pound also are accepted as part of the challenge.

“Donations made from now until April 30 will be collected, and the number will be reported to the Feinstein Foundation,” said Sister Mildred Ely, manager of the food pantry for the District Council located on Via Mount Carmel.

Donations may be made to the Youngstown District Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, P.O. Box 224, Youngstown, Ohio 44501-0224. Funds support the organization’s hunger relief endeavors, which include a food pantry, which is open five days a week, and a dining hall that serves hot meals six days a week.
