BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

The Boy Scout movement, which is in its 99th year nationally, is on the move in Mahoning County and the area. Here are some 2008 activities:

The combined scout units of the Greater Western Reserve Council, consisting of six counties including Mahoning and Trumbull, provided 100,000 hours of community service. If valued at $21 an hour, that translates to $2.1 million. In Mahoning County, projects included blood and food drives, Mill Creek MetroParks clean-up and restoration of community assets.

25 Boy Scouts earned the rank of Eagle in Mahoning County and in so doing provided 5,000 hours of community service.

The Scoutreach Program served 680 youths in Youngstown and Mahoning County, up from 350 in 2007. The program reaches out to young people who, because of financial or other circumstances, would not be able to participate in scouting.

The BSA’s traditional programs of Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting grew 5 percent.
