Softball loses pair in Florida
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Youngstown State softball team fell to 1-7 after dropping a pair of games on its second day at the Rebel Games. The Penguins fell to South Dakota, 9-4, and Maine, 12-5, at the Osceola Softball Complex.
Against South Dakota, freshman Haley Thomas went 2-for-3 with a run scored and drove in a run and sophomore Kim Klonowski drove in three of the Penguins’ runs against the Coyotes.
Against Maine, the Penguins, who committed six errors, trailed 4-0 after 21‚Ñ2 innings before using a five-run third to overtake the Black Bears, 5-4.
The Penguins face IPFW and Penn today at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
Baseball in 7-5 loss
TOWSON, Md. — Towson rallied in the final two innings for the second straight game and defeated the Youngstown State baseball team 7-5 in the series finale Sunday at Schuerholz Park.
The Penguins jumped out to a 5-1 lead through four innings, but they were held scoreless on four hits by three Towson relievers. YSU outhit the Tigers 12-10 but stranded at least one runner in every inning but the third and ninth and 10 overall.
Three of Towson’s hits were homers, two of which came in a three-run eighth. The Tigers also scored three of their runs on sacrifice flies.
John Koehnlein, David Leon, Jacke Healey and Casey Holland had two hits apiece for YSU, which lost all three games at Towson by a total of four runs and fell to 2-6. Holland hit his first career homer, and Leon and Healey both doubled.
Penguins starter Matt Tucker allowed two runs on five hits in six innings and left with a 5-2 lead. The Tigers scored five runs off the YSU bullpen.
The Penguins will continue their spring break trip at 3 p.m. today against Longwood.

Area hockey champs
WOOSTER — The Mooney/Ursuline Thunder hockey club won the championship of the Alan Fenton Tournament on Sunday, defeating Fremont 5-2.
The Thunder also Akron Canton Penguins, 11-3, and Wooster Generals, 12-4, and tied Fremont 3-3 in the round robin.
Scoring leaders for the Thunder were Dean Macklen (six goals and eight assists), Ryan Demyen (5-7), Brian Styers (4-3), Alex Figuly (3-5), Phil Tate (2-7), Ryan Carothers (five goals), Vince Fornes (4-1), Louie Morocco (1-3) and Joe Geiser (1-2). Bronson Lamoncha added three assists, while Phil Monrean and Nick Carney had two each and Roger Geiser, Sesti Boniface, Brian Helbley, Will Baringer and Jonathan Welsh all had one.
In goal, Jonathan Welsh stopped 18 of 22 shots and Roger Geiser stopped 46 of 54 shots.
Lordstown girls break records
KENT — Athletes from Lordstown High set three school records at an indoor track and field meet at Kent State University on Saturday.
Kayla Ellks ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.7 seconds, Courtney Beatty finished the 800 in 2:37.6, and the 4x800 relay of Beatty, Madita Schroedter, Hilary Minton and Beth Linert finished in 11:15.6.

4 from Westminster in NCAA Championships
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Four members of the Westminster College women’s team qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships March 18-21 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Qualifying were the 400-yard medley relay of Megan Mier, Caitlin Lehberger, Emily Dressler and Natalie Rambish. The foursome will also swim in the 200 medley relay and two other relays to be determined.
Mier also qualified in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke; Lehberger in the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke; Rambish in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly, and Dressler in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles.
Minto returns April 17
BUTLER, Pa. — Brian “The Beast” Minto will return to the ring on April 17 against an unnamed opponent at the Days Inn Convention Center.
Minto (32-2, 21 KOs) is ranked No. 10 by the WBO and No. 15 by the WBA, and holds the WBA Fedecentro belt. Managed by Pat Nelson of Youngstown, Minto has won five straight fights by knockout.
His will be the feature bout of eight on the card. Other locals expected to fight are middleweight prospects Dave Cook and Sam Suska and heavyweight Paul Zalus.
Heavyweight Brandon Winner of Youngstown, who won a fight on the Pavlik-Rubio undercard on Feb. 21, is also slated to fight. Tickets ($35 general admission and $750 tables) will be available starting Wednesday at The Days Inn Convention Center in Butler or by calling (724) 287-6761.
