Pupils invited to enter Holocaust Writing

Holocaust Writing Contest

YOUNGSTOWN — Pupils in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, Western Pennsylvania and area colleges and universities are invited to enter a Holocaust Writing Contest sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Never Again: What You Do Matters.”

Judging will be done in four categories: grades 7-8; grades 9-10; grades 11-12; and college.

Each category will receive one award for poetry and one for narrative writing.

All entries must be typed or printed, double-spaced on one side of numbered pages up to 1,500 words. Entries will be judged on originality, content, appearance and adherence to the theme and must be accompanied by a title page showing the participant’s name, home address and telephone number, school address and telephone number, teacher’s name and grade.

Submission deadline is April 3. Submissions may be mailed to the Jewish Community Relations Council, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, OH, 44504-1314 or sent by e-mail in Microsoft Word format to jcrc@jewishyoungstown.org.

Presentation of awards will be made during the April 21 Community Yom Hashoah Commemoration Ceremony at the Mahoning County Courthouse at noon.

Yom Hashoah is the internationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day set aside to remember all victims of the Holocaust and to remind society of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference reign.
