Mahoning Valley unemployment rates climb

Unemployment rates in the Mahoning Valley soared in January as employers big and small cut jobs.

The state today released these jobless rates: Mahoning County, 13.4 percent; up from 8.5 percent in December; Trumbull County, 14.7 percent, up from 9.9 percent in December; Columbiana County 12.8 percent, up from 8.9 percent.

All of the local rates are double, or nearly double, where they were in January 2008.
