YSU track teams are both runners-up


GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Youngstown State junior Alisha Anthony was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and freshman Kiplangat Tisia was selected Running Newcomer of the Year and seven different Penguins won league titles at the Horizon League Indoor Championships.

Anthony won the long jump with a distance of 5.70 meters and was second in the triple jump.

Anthony has won the long jump three consecutive years at the Indoor Championships. Anthony was also third in the 60-meters and fifth in the 200.

Tisia, in his first conference meet, won the 5,000, was fourth in the mile and eighth in the 3,000.

Both YSU squads finished runners-up to Milwaukee. The Panthers outscored the YSU women 165-120 and the Penguins’ men squad, 147-98.

For the women, both senior Jen Grayson and sophomore Danielle Curry defended their 2008 indoor titles. Grayson won the high jump (1.63) and Curry took first in the shot put with a personal-best throw (13.75). Curry also added another personal best and finished second in the weight throw.

Stephanie Jarvis and Amanda Carpin took second and third in the pole vault, respectively; Alexis Hall was third in the weight throw and Kaitlyn Griffith was third in the shot put.

Breanne Romeo was second in the 400 while Robyn Ray was second in the high jump and fourth in the pentathlon — she won the high jump stage — and the triple jump .

Among the men sophomore Jerrill Hall broke the league record in the 60 hurdles (8.22) and was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump.

Senior Joe Lahmon won the weight throw (18.73) and was fifth in the shot put.

J.R. Hodge won the 60 (7.02) and Michael Perri was third in the pentathlon. He won the long jump and 1,000 stages. John Pallini finished second in the shot put.

Swimming

BROWN DEER, Wis. — Youngstown State overtook Cleveland State for fifth place at the Horizon League Championships on Saturday.

The Penguins set three school records and had three individuals place in the top six of three events.

The 400 freestyle relay of Kirstin Walker, Ashley Williamson, Nishani Cicilson and Megan Rupe with set a school record in 3:30.48.
