Malott bowling champ

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Wes Malott earned his sixth career PBA Tour title on Sunday, beating hometown favorite Ronnie Russell 248-195 to win the Etonic Marathon Open at Woodland Bowl.

Malott, of Pflugerville, Texas, won his third title of the year to claim the $35,000 first prize and take a commanding lead in the race for Player of the Year.

“That’s the goal right now,” Malott said. “This puts me in good position, but I can’t slack off. There’s Norm Duke, Patrick Allen and some others behind me so I’ve got to stay sharp.”

The unusual tournament format consisted of 54 games — total pinfall with no match play — over four days contested on six different PBA Tour lane condition patterns leading up to the stepladder finals.

Man U beats Spurs in League Cup shootout

WEMBLEY, England — Manchester United won the League Cup with a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Tottenham on Sunday that kept the English Premier League leaders on course for an unprecedented five trophies this season.

After a 0-0 draw through extra time, United goalkeeper Ben Foster saved Tottenham’s first shootout kick from Jamie O’Hara and David Bentley missed the third before Anderson hit the winning penalty.

The victory gave United its second trophy of the season following December’s Club World Cup title. The Red Devils also lead the Premier League by seven points and are in contention for the Champions League and FA Cup.

Euro 2016 update

GLASGOW, Scotland — Scotland and Wales abandoned plans for a joint bid to host the 2016 European soccer championships on Sunday because funding the required infrastructure developments would be tough during the global economic downturn.

The problems were exacerbated when UEFA announced plans to expand the tournament to 24 teams, which would require more stadiums, training camps and accommodation, as well as better transport links.

Only the Millennium Stadium would currently meet UEFA’s requirements in Wales and deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said it would cost “tens of millions of pounds” to upgrade stadiums.

Vonn takes super-G

BANSKO, Bulgaria — Lindsey Vonn won her fourth straight super-G race Sunday and promised to chase more trophies on the women’s World Cup circuit after a successful stop in Bulgaria.

“There is no conservative skiing for me,” the 24-year-old American said. “I have to be really aggressive — that’s my strategy.”

After three races here, the defending overall World Cup champion widened her lead in the standings to nearly 100 points.
