2 killed in car accident

MERCER, Pa. — An elderly driver and his passenger died in a two-car crash on Mercer-Pulaski Road at Orchard Road in Lackawannock Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The crash happened at 5:25 p.m. Saturday.

Dead at the scene were Robert Stumpf, 84, of Orchard Road, and Amy K. Stumpf, 44, of the same address.

Troopers said Stumpf, traveling north on Orchard Road, pulled from a stop sign into the path of another vehicle driven by Jamie Lee Hess, 36, of Stonepile Road, New Wilmington. Hess, traveling west on Mercer-Pulaski Road, had four passengers in his vehicle.

All involved were wearing seat belts.

The investigation is ongoing.

Crash victim identified

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The woman killed when she lost control of her vehicle on icy U.S. Route 62, the Shenango Valley Freeway, has been identified by police as 35-year-old Melissa Miller of Mercer.

The crash near Buhl Farm Drive occurred around 9:50 p.m. Friday.

Miller had been a teacher in the Farrell School District and a volleyball coach at West Middlesex High School.

Cemetery cleanup

NILES — The caretaker at St. Stephen Cemetery asks that all Christmas decorations be removed from graves before March 15. Any that remain after that date will be discarded.

Easter and spring decorations will not be removed.

Camp Cadet class

BUTLER, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police are accepting applications for the 40th Camp Cadet class.

Camp Cadet is a weeklong camp for boys and girls ages 12-15 who have an interest in law enforcement. The camp will help build a child’s self-confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, self-respect and respect for others.

Youths from Butler, Beaver, Mercer and Lawrence counties can participate in the 2009 camp, which will be at Camp Lutherlyn in Prospect, Pa., during the week of Aug. 9-14.

The registration cost is $30, plus participation in selling 10 raffle tickets.

Black history program

YOUNGSTOWN — A black history program of two plays, “We Are” and “Rosa Parks,” will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave.

The programs feature extraordinary black women of the past, present and future. There also will be poetry readings, mimes and music.

The program is free and open to all.
