Baseball rallies

LEXINGTON, Va. — For the second straight game, the YSU baseball team rallied from four runs down to defeat VMI 9-4.

The Penguins, down 4-0 through five innings, scored three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and five in the ninth.

Junior Jacke Healey knocked in the game-winning run for the second straight day with a one-out RBI double that opened the flood gates.

Ten Penguins batted in the ninth as YSU had six of its 14 hits in the inning. VMI helped with two errors, and all but one of YSU’s runs was unearned.

All 14 of YSU’s hits came after the fourth inning, and six of those were doubles.

Casey Holland went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Healey finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Canfield hockey players get honors

CANFIELD — Two members of the Canfield High hockey team have received post-season recognition by the Greater Cleveland League.

Freshman goalie Roger Geiser was picked honorable mention all-Blue League and first-team Blue South Division.

Sophomore forward Riley Emery was picked second-team Blue South.

Training program at Freeway Lanes

WARREN — A bronze conference training program for bowling coaches and those interested in coaching will be March 20-22 at Freeway Lanes, 2700 Parkman Rd.

Coaches attending will receive training that will prepare them to work with intermediate-level bowlers. It is also designed to supply individuals with the tools and information to pursue coaching as a profession.

The course continues to develop the four essential keys of the sport: physical game, lane play, equipment and mental game. Cost is $275 before March 5 and $305 thereafter.

Curbstone Coaches

BOARDMAN — Attorney Lou Schiavoni will replace his son, Sen. Joseph Schiavoni, as the weekly speaker at Curbstone Coaches on Monday.

Kelly Pavlik will be in Orlando for a program and Joe will accompany him. In his son’s absence, Lou, an advisor to Team Pavlik, will pinch hit.

MASSILLON — In a non-scoring indoor track & field meet, the Lordstown High School girl’s 4x100 relay team of Jessica Reinke, JoHaana Morgan, Katie Bellay and Kayla Ellks took first place with a time of 57.4 seconds.

The school’s 4x800 relay was second (11:40). The members are Courtney Beatty, Bethany Linert, Hilary Minton and Madita Schroedter.

In the high jump, Becca Tobin was second (4-8).

Among the Lordstown boys, Peston Hall was first in the 55 hurdles (8.3) and the 4x400 relay team took second (3:55.8).

New Cavaliers

LEAVITTSBURGH — LaBrae High School senior Nate Elliott will play football at Walsh Univ. in the fall.

Elliott was a first-team all-Northeast Ohio defensive lineman and will play in the North-South game in June.

Hardhats to meet

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Hardhats’ football team will hold a mandatory meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckeye Elks, 421 North Ave, Youngstown, announced coach Mark Greene.

All team members must be present for uniform fitting, and must bring their shoulder pads.

Mercyhurst to host Women’s Frozen Four

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst College in Erie has been chosen to host the 2011 NCAA Women’s Hockey Frozen Four tournament.

The games between the top four Division I women’s hockey teams will be played March 18 and 20 that year, at Tullio Arena. The 5,500-seat arena is home to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.

Mercyhurst is a women’s college hockey power. The Lakers are expected to receive a bid in this year’s NCAA tournament when seedings are announced March 8. Mercyhurst has been picked for the tournament the last four seasons.

Stymie Handicap

NEW YORK — Barrier Reef beat Real Merchant by 31‚Ñ4 lengths Saturday in the $71,305 Stymie Handicap at Aqueduct.

The victory was the third straight at the Big A since Jan. 2 for the gray 4-year-old colt trained by Tom Albertrani. Barrier Reef, 5-for-6 over Aqueduct’s winterized inner track, is winless in five races over other surfaces.

The latest victory was a bold statement as Barrier Reef rallied from last in the eight-horse field with Ramon Dominguez aboard. After briefly losing momentum in traffic on the final turn, Barrier Reef took charge when the jam-up cleared.

Jockey hurt again

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Jockey Javier Castellano has been injured again, thrown from his mount in the first race at Gulfstream Park.

He missed the previous four weeks with an injured shoulder. This latest mishap Saturday was not believed to be serious. Castellano was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with a sore back and right leg.

He skipped the remainder of his mounts on the card and his status for today was unknown.

Castellano hadn’t raced since Jan. 31, when he fell during a race and hurt his right shoulder.

Staelhi wins skeleton

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Gregor Staehli of Switzerland has won the men’s competition at the skeleton world championships.

Staehli finished the three heats Saturday in 2 minutes, 46.58 seconds to beat Adam Pengilly of Britain by 0.35 seconds. World Cup champion Alexander Tretiakov of Russia won the bronze.

The second heat of competition Friday was canceled because of irregular track conditions.

Armstrong to attend start of Vuelta Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will give the start signal at the Vuelta Mexico race, but won’t compete in the eight-stage tour.

He will attend the start of the March 1-8 race in the southern city of Oaxaca today, after meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Saturday to launch his Livestrong anti-cancer campaign in Mexico.

The Vuelta features 10 Mexican teams and 10 foreign squads racing from Oaxaca to Mexico City. After a hiatus of several years, the race returned in 2008.
