Trebilcock 200 IM winner at state meet

The Canfield junior helped his team to a fifth-place finish.

CANTON — Junior Garrett Trebilcock of Canfield High School found the perfect time to recover from a nasty case of bronchitis.

Trebilcock won the state Division II championship Saturday in the 200-yard individual medley with a school and state record time.

Trebilcock swam the 200 IM in one minute, 53 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the runner-up, Michael Gallagher of St. Mary Central (1:54.63).

The state record in the event was 1:53.18, set in the preliminary round.

Trebilcock also placed ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.55).

“It was a great state meet; the times were pretty fast,” said Canfield coach Andrea Linnelli.

It was the first individual swimming state championship in Canfield history.

“The only problem with Garrett is, he was a little ill at the sectionals and he was still recovering in the district,” Linnelli said.

“If you know Garrett, you know he would pull it out. He swam beautifully.”

Last year he took sixth place in the 200 IM.

“I had bronchitis in the sectionals,” Garrett said. “It takes 2-3 weeks to recover.

“I was trying to recover both physically and mentally.”

He set his goal of winning the state IM and credited his coach in keeping him focused.

“I was kind of nervous but I got mentally ready,” Trebilcock said.

“It was everything I dreamt it would be,” he said of winning his crown.

His brother, Canfield sophomore Galvin Trebilcock, took ninth in the 50 freestyle (21.80) and was 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.44).

Also for Canfield, senior Ryan King placed second in the 100 backstroke (50.90) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (47.52).

King’s effort in the backstroke was a school record, snapping the 52.02 established by Marcus Becherer in 1999.

Canfield had three relay teams place in the state meet.

The Cardinals took third in the 200 freestyle (1:26.15) with a school record time; fourth in the 200 medley with a school-record tying time (1:36.15); and tenth in the 400 freestyle (3:20.45).

Members of the two 200 relays were the Trebilcock brothers, King and John Stefanski.

On the 400 relay team were Steven Dalvin, Sam Garea, Ryan O’Malley and Stefanski.

Among other area male swimmers, senior Ben Haren of Lisbon placed 15th in the 100-yard backstroke (55.23).

In the girls Div. II meet, three swimmers each placed in two events.

Sophomore Emily Gysegem of Lakeview took third in the 200 IM (2:09.72) and was seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:00.52).

Maplewood’s Jordan Moxley placed third in the 50 freestyle (24:01) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.50).

Sophomore Katie Joseph of McDonald took second in the 100 freestyle (52.47) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.36).

University School won the boys meet with 288 points and Canfield was fifth with 151 points.

The state meet was held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.
