WARREN — Humility of Mary Health Partners’ St. Joseph Health Center, as a participant in Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio’s Hospital Quality Program, ranked in the top 10 percent of comparable hospitals for 11 of the program’s 12 core indicators related to patient care and safety.

Anthem’s program measures aspects of the quality of medical care and patient outcomes based on hospital-reported data related to various patient safety and health issues.

It also helps to identify variances in the quality measures that can assist hospitals in developing or refining programs or procedures to improve patient outcomes.

Donations sought

BOARDMAN — WellnessOne is asking the community to donate new coats, hats and glove-and-scarf sets to be distributed to people in need.

AHA awards for Northside

YOUNGSTOWN — Northside Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award for Coronary Artery Disease and the Bronze Performance Achievement Award for Heart Failure.

Hospitals receiving the gold award must have demonstrated that for 24 consecutive months at least 85 percent of its eligible coronary patients were discharged after the AHA’s recommended treatment guidelines.

The bronze award signifies that the hospital treated heart failure patients for at least 90 days with at least 85 percent compliance to core standards outlined by the AHA/American College of Cardiology for secondary prevention.

Free health fair

YOUNGSTOWN — WellnessOne and Youngstown Christian School are offering their first free community Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 12 at the school gymnasium, 4401 Southern Blvd.

Health care specialists and representatives from various organizations and businesses will be on hand. Free health screenings are spine and posture and blood pressure checks and bone density scans.

Humility of Mary Health Partners will provide cholesterol checks from 9 a.m. to noon for $5.

Food and drink will be available for purchase. Parking and admission are free, and there will be door prizes and giveaways.

Researchers at Boston’s MassGeneral Hospital for Children have found that the toxins in tobacco smoke linger in clothing, car seats, carpets and everything else long after cigarettes have been extinguished. They’re calling it third-hand smoke, according to a recent issue of the medical journal Pediatrics, and it may be associated with cognitive deficits among children. The No. 1 solution? It’s clear: quit smoking.
