Volleyball schedule set

YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU volleyball team will play four first-time opponents and have 10 home matches in the fall.

The Penguins will open the season Aug. 28 with three matches at Maryland and they will play host to Butler to start the Horizon League schedule on Sept. 17.

Seven of YSU’s opponents won at least 19 matches last season.

The Penguins and Maryland will play for the first time in school history and YSU will also play Villanova and Stony Brook for the second time ever in College Park, Md.

Kinsey takes 11th at USA outdoors

EUGENE, Ore. — University of Akron junior Daniel Kinsey, a Beaver Local High graduate, placed 11th out of 13 competitors in the decathlon at last weekend’s USA outdoor track and field championships at Hayward Field.

Kinsey, one of just three competitors representing a college or university, scored 7,178 points.

Trey Hardee (Nike) was first with 8,261 points in the 10-event competition.

Kinsey fared best in the throwing events, winning the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 11 inches; placing third in the shot put (47-6 1/4) and fourth in the javelin (188-5).

Kinsey placed 10th in the decathlon at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships in mid-June to earn All-America.

Frost takes division

Amanda Frost of Columbiana won the women’s division at the fifth annual NEO Triathlon Kickoff at Clay’s Park Resort.

She completed the event which includes a 500-meter swim, a 13-mile bicycle race and 3.2 mile run in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 30.9 seconds.

Titan Football Golf

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Westminster College football team raised approximately $6,500 at the Titan Football Golf Outing held at the Oakview Golf Club.

The proceeds will help enhance the student-athlete experience for members of the Titan football program.

There were 96 golfers competed in the four-player, best-ball scramble event.

The winning team received a $400 cash prize. The foursome of Larry Ondako (New Castle, Pa.), Gary Rosatelli Jr. (Pittsburgh), Greg Rosatelli (Clinton, Pa.) and Greg McMillen (Aliquippa, Pa.) shot a 14-under-par 56 to win the event.

Penguins forward Adams signs contract

PITTSBURGH — Craig Adams, a fourth-line forward, has signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Adams, who agreed to terms Monday, had three goals and two assists in 24 playoff games for the Stanley Cup champion Penguins. He had two goals and four assists in 36 games with Chicago and one assist in nine regular-season games after being claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh on March 4.

Forwards Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Petr Sykora and Miroslav Satan, defensemen Rob Scuderi, Hal Gill and Philippe Boucher and goalie Mathieu Garon can all become free agents Wednesday.

Steelers sign OL Urbik

PITTSBURGH — Offensive lineman Kraig Urbik, the first of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ three third-round draft picks, has signed a three-year contract.

The Steelers have eight of their nine picks under contract after signing Urbik on Monday. Their only unsigned draft choice is first-rounder Ziggy Hood, a defensive end from Missouri.

The 6-foot-5, 328-pound Urbik played both right guard and right tackle at Wisconsin, making 50 starts. He is expected to play right guard for Pittsburgh, competing with starter Darnell Stapleton and backup Trai Essex.

Pair join US Olympic hockey coaching staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Ron Wilson’s coaching staff for the U.S. Olympic hockey team is complete, with the addition of assistants John Tortorella and Scott Gordon.

Tortorella coaches the New York Rangers and Gordon coaches the New York Islanders.

Wilson, the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was appointed Olympic coach in April.
