Warren Harding’s Byler helps lift Spikes past MV

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Warren Harding High graduate Justin Byler singled and drove in two runs to lead the State College Spikes to a 6-1 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in New York-Penn League action Monday.

Byler also walked and scored a run for the Spikes (5-6), who took a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Greg Folgia and Rafael Vera each had two hits for the Scrappers (7-4), while Jason Smit tripled and scored the team’s only run in the sixth inning.

John Allman, Juan Aponte and Kyle Smith also had singles for the Scrappers, who had eight hits but were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Mahoning Valley stranded nine runners and grounded into three double plays.

Ryan Anthony (0-2) started and lasted just one inning, surrendering four runs (all earned) on three hits with two walks.

Tyler Sturdevant and Guido Fonseca each threw two shutout innings of relief.

Mahoning Valley will finish the three-game series tonight then head to Eastwood Field for a three-game series beginning Wednesday.
