Braves 2, Red Sox 1

ATLANTA — Rookie Tommy Hanson threw six scoreless innings despite a bout with the flu, and homers by Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson carried Atlanta, preventing a Red Sox sweep. Pitching dominated the weekend series, with the teams combining for only nine runs in three games. Hanson (4-0) kept it going, limiting Boston to two hits on another sweltering day at Turner Field and extending his scoreless streak to 20 innings.

Tigers 4, Astros 3

HOUSTON — Brandon Inge hit a two-run homer off Jose Valverde with two outs in the ninth inning and the Tigers averted a sweep with a win over the Astros. Kaz Matsui’s RBI double off Edwin Jackson in the seventh gave Houston a 3-2 lead. Fernando Rodney shut out Houston in the ninth to stay perfect in 17 save opportunities.

Rays 5, Marlins 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — David Price allowed one run over 61‚Ñ3 innings and the Rays beat the Marlins to complete a three-game sweep. Price (2-2) gave up two hits, five walks and had four strikeouts. The first overall pick in the 2007 amateur draft was coming off a pair of losses in which the left-hander was touched for 15 runs and 17 hits in 11 1-3 innings.

Phillies 5, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO — Chase Utley hit a two-run triple, Jamie Moyer won back-to-back starts for the first time in more than two months. Moyer (6-6) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings to win consecutive starts for the first time since April 21 and 26. He won just one of his following nine starts before beating Tampa Bay last Tuesday.

Chan Ho Park pitched two perfect innings before the Blue Jays threatened in the eighth against Ryan Madson. A single, an error and a two-out intentional walk loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Russ Adams, who popped out.

Nationals 5, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE — John Lannan took a four-hitter into the eighth inning, Adam Dunn hit a colossal home run, and the Nationals defeated the Orioles to avoid a three-game sweep. Willie Harris also homered for the Nationals, and Josh Willingham had three hits and scored twice.

White Sox 6, Cubs 0

CHICAGO — John Danks pitched seven shutout innings, Chris Getz stole home against Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago White Sox got another run on a bases-loaded infield fly rule to beat the Cubs. Danks (6-6) allowed four hits and reliever Scott Linebrink completed the shutout as the White Sox won two of three before sellout crowds at U.S. Cellular Field.

Twins 6, Cardinals 2

ST. LOUIS — Francisco Liriano pitched seven strong innings, Justin Morneau hit a three-run home run and the Twins beat the Cardinals. Joe Mauer singled his first two at bats for the Twins to hike his average to .400 before a double-play ball, a groundout and a strikeout dropped him to .394. Jason Kubel had three hits and an RBI and Brendan Harris had two RBIs to help Minnesota take two of three from St. Louis while completing interleague play at 12-6. Joe Nathan got the last out for his 19th save in 21 chances and 14th straight. Mark DeRosa, acquired Saturday night from the Indians, batted cleanup and had three groundouts and a walk for the Cardinals.

Mariners 4, Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES — Jose Lopez had three hits including a two-run double, Adrian Beltre singled home a run in his last game before undergoing shoulder surgery, and the Mariners beat the Dodgers. Lopez, in his fourth game back with the Mariners after spending the previous six on the bereavement list because of the illness and subsequent death of his sister in Venezuela, was 8 for 12 with four RBIs in the interleague series.

Rockies 3, Athletics 1

OAKLAND, Calif. — Aaron Cook took a shutout into the ninth inning and won his fifth consecutive start as the Rockies defeated the Athletics. Chris Iannetta, Carlos Gonzalez and Seth Smith each drove in a run for the Rockies, who completed their first sweep of the A’s and their fourth sweep in June. Ryan Sweeney had two hits for the A’s, who lost their fifth, matching their season high. Cook (8-3) gave up nine hits while walking one and striking out four. Vin Mazzaro (2-3) gave up three runs on five hits in five-plus innings.

Angels 12, Diamondbacks 8

PHOENIX — Gary Matthews Jr. stole home and hit a three-run double, Juan Rivera, Jeff Mathis and Maicer Izturis homered and the Angels beat the Diamondbacks. The Angels nearly blew a seven-run fifth-inning. Leading 9-2 in the fifth, they let the NL West cellar dwellers draw within 9-8 in the sixth before the bullpen closed the door. Los Angeles swept the three-game series and wrapped up interleague play with a majors-leading 14-4 record, including going 8-1 on the road. Padres 2, Rangers 0

ARLINGTON, Texas — Chad Gaudin allowed one hit over eight scoreless innings and Scott Hairston snapped an 0-for-17 slide with a homer for San Diego as the Padres won their first series in a month.

National League

Giants 7, Brewers 0

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Sadowski scattered four hits over six scoreless innings in his major league debut and the Giants avoided a three-game sweep with a win over the Brewers. Matt Downs hit his first major league homer and Nate Schierholtz had four hits, including a homer for the Giants, who snapped a six-game skid in Milwaukee after watching a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth crumble Saturday night. With the shadows creeping across the infield, the 26-year-old Sadowski (1-0) worked in and out of trouble and the Giants took advantage of Brewers starter Jeff Suppan’s sudden struggles.
