Spartans prevail

CLEVELAND — The Cuyahoga County Spartans defeated the Crestview Renegades 16-12 in a minor league football game.

The Spartans converted a 4th-and-25 with two minutes remaining to pull out the decision.

Joel Kiss (Hopewell, Pa.) threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Russell (Beaver Local) for the Renegades.

Jordan Reynolds (Crestview) added two 30-yard field goals.

Russell rushed for 56 yards.

Cory Stevens (Crestview) had two sacks to pace the defense.

Sharon Speedway

HARTFORD — Defending divisional champion Dan Shetler became the fifth different winner in 410 Sprint action at Sharon Speedway.

Joe Gabrielson picked up his first E-Mod win of the year and Bruce Redman claimed his second consecutive Pro-Stock victory.

Also, Guy Griffin picked up his fourth Limited Sprint win.

Monmouth feature

OCEANPORT, N.J. — Girlfrienontheside overtook two rivals in the deep stretch to win the $60,000 Crank It Up Stakes by a neck at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

Trained by Anthony Dutrow and ridden by Chuck C. Lopez, the 3-year-old filly ran the 51‚Ñ2 furlongs on the firm turf course in 1:02 and returned $5, $3.40 and $2.80. Snow Lass, who led for most of the race, paid $10.60 and $7.20, while Lady Alexander was another neck back in third and returned $5.60.

It was the third win in seven career starts for Girlfrienontheside, who boosted her earnings to $126,990.

Belmont handicap

NEW YORK — Porte Bonheur beat Spritely by a nose Sunday to capture the $150,000 First Flight Handicap for fillies and mares at Belmont Park.

Ramon Dominguez swung the 4-year-old four wide turning for home and Porte Bonheur rallied relentlessly to earn her sixth win in 11 starts.

Trained by David Duggan, Porte Bonheur ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.45 on the fast track to earn $90,000 for Johanna Murphy-Leopoldsberger.

The 2-1 favorite, Porte Bonheur paid $6, $3.40 and $2.40. Spritely returned $4.80 and $3.10. Turn Away paid $2.90 to show.

Switzerland takes team triathlon

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Lukas Salvisberg pulled away in the final 300 meters to give Switzerland a surprise victory Sunday in a world championship mixed team race at the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon.

The first-of-its kind event featured teams of two men and two women, each competing in a 250-meter swim, a 6.6-kilometer bike ride and a 1,600-meter run.

Salvisberg, who finished 21st in Saturday’s individual event, and Hy-Vee silver medalist Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia were virtually even in each segment of their anchor leg until Salvisberg made his move.

Lopez stops Lontchi

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Juan Manuel Lopez stopped Olivier Lontchi in the ninth round to retain the WBO junior featherweight title.

For Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs), the TKO was his 14th consecutive knockout.

“I knew going to be difficult,” Lopez said. “He was very awkward and very difficult to fight. I think the he was way fighting he wasn’t really boxing. He was running a lot. I didn’t feel like I was fighting as much as chasing. But I knew my strength would eventually get to him. I thought my power would wear him down.”

The 26-year-old earned the win when Lontchi went to his corner after the ninth round and told his trainer he was unable to continue.

Black Mamba wins

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Defending champion Black Mamba caught Charming Legacy just before the wire to win the $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap by a head at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

Under jockey Garrett Gomez, Black Mamba covered 11‚Ñ4 miles in 1:59.72, snapping a five-race winless streak dating to last summer.

Black Mamba paid $3.40 and $2.20. There was no show betting in the field reduced to four with the scratches of Hot n’ Dusty and Restless Soul. The place payoff on Charming Legacy, ridden by Joe Talamo, was $3.20.

Black Mamba, trained by John Sadler, won $90,000 to boost her earnings to $808,851.
