Tax extension

Tax extension

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Lawrence County Treasurer Richard L. Rapone will extend the date to pay county taxes at the face value to Thursday.

To accommodate taxpayers who receive their checks at the beginning of the month, the treasurer will give taxpayers the courtesy and additional time to satisfy their 2009 county tax before the 10-percent penalty is incurred.

All taxpayers wishing to receive the face amount must have their payments in to the county treasurer’s office by 4 p.m. Thursday. Mail payments postmarked by that day also will be accepted. The penalty phase of county tax collections will begin after that date.

Police alerts online in several townships

GOSHEN — The police district that covers Goshen and Green townships and Beloit Village can transmit information to residents by e-mail, cellular phone or the Internet.

The district has become a user of Nixle.com, a community information service designed to deliver timely information to residents.

Police can send e-mails or text-message alerts on everything from traffic updates, road closings, missing persons, crime warnings and weather hazards.

The service is available at no cost to residents or police. It uses the same model as Twitter while adding security measures. The program allows police to send alerts from within a half-mile to a 20-mile radius of where something is happening.
