Summer Fest of Arts is seeking volunteers

YOUNGSTOWN — The Summer Festival of the Arts, July 11 and 12 at Youngstown State University, is looking for help. Volunteers should be 14 or older; families and friends will be scheduled together when requested.

Various shifts are available for the two-day event as well as the July 10 set-up day. Each volunteer receives an SFA T-shirt and reserved free parking. Lori A. Factor, festival coordinator, said, “Our volunteer corps is crucial to the festival’s success. With over 13,000 festivalgoers, the volunteers are able to give a personal touch to many areas of this event.”

U.S. Army Field Band at Maag Amphitheater

BOARDMAN — The U.S. Army Field Band of Washington, D.C., will present a free concert at 8 p.m. Friday at the Maag Outdoor Amphitheater in Boardman Park. Fireworks will follow at approximately 9:45 p.m.

The 65-member band plays marches, overtures, popular music, patriotic selections, and instrumental and vocal solos.

In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave.

Art Outreach Gallery will have fundraiser

NILES — The Art Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall will host Shades of Summer, a fundraiser, at 7 p.m. July 19, featuring musical guest Chookie Alberini. The event will benefit the gallery’s youth programs.

The mall has donated the space to the gallery, which operates with volunteers, but the gallery must raise funds to pay utilities and teachers and to buy supplies.

Boardman schools summer orchestra

BOARDMAN — The Boardman Local Schools will again offer an opportunity for musicians throughout the community to perform orchestral music together in the annual Boardman Orchestra Summer Community Orchestra (BOSCO). The orchestra has no auditions or try-outs. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings beginning at 7 p.m., and the annual performance will be 7 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. McDONALD — The 2009 McDonald concert series will be at the Ramsey Pavilion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday nights, starting July 9. The schedule is as follows: July 9, Del Rezek Orchestra; July 16, Rocco Monaco Orchestra; July 23, Jim Frank Combo; July 30, Don Burns Orchestra; Aug. 6, Mahoning Valley Button Box Club; and Aug. 13, Frank Gallo Orchestra.

Michael Jackson tribute party at B&O

YOUNGSTOWN — A Tribute to Michael Jackson party will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., near downtown, featuring DJ Greg Johnson, who will play Jackson’s music. There will be a Michael Jackson look-alike and dance contest. The event is 21 and over. Admission is $5 at the door.
