Fitch selects Santor as golf coach

Vindicator staff report

AUSTINTOWN — Ed Santor was recently named the new boys golf coach at Austintown Fitch.

Santor, who replaces Jake Corbett, reported that 28 boys have signed up for the 2009 season, which starts Aug. 17. The regular season concludes the end of September before tournaments begin.

Santor’s previous head coaching experience was in football at Southington and Liberty in the late 1970s. His first coaching position was as an assistant at Warren JFK.

After coaching at Liberty, Santor also left teaching and went into private industry. He worked in sales for the last 30 years.

Now that he’s semi-retired, Santor sought the Fitch golf job after hearing about it from a friend.

His interviews were with the athletic director, assistant A.D. and principal.

Santor, 66, hopes to elevate the Falcons in Federal League competition.

Returning seniors are Mike Basista, Nico Saborse and Corey Sheely, while seniors as newcomers are Zach Brinkman and Kevin Pangio. Returning juniors are Brandon Riley and Eric Vereb.

Prior to graduating from East High School in 1961, Santor caddied at Youngstown Country Club which, at that time, belong to the Western Golf Association. The WGA sponsored scholarships named after Chick Evans, an amateur from the Chicago area who played in several U.S. Open tournaments.

Upon graduation, Santor attended Northwestern on a Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship.

Ed Santor comes from a family of golfers, including his father, Andy, who was the area’s top amateur at one time.

Brothers Bob and Bill were also scratch handicap golfers.

His nephew, Andy, is the head pro at Mill Creek.
