FEMA investigates storm toll in Pa.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Federal Emergency Management Agency officials surveyed damage in two Pittsburgh-area communities that are seeking disaster aid for severe storm damage last week.

The FEMA workers visited Turtle Creek and Jeannette, both several miles east of the city, Thursday.

Thousands of people were left without power and many roads and basements flooded when the storms produced more than four inches of rain in some areas June 17-18.

In some areas, the rainfall was the heaviest recorded since remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused severe flooding in September 2004.

Hundreds of homes were damaged by flooding in Allegheny County, which includes Turtle Creek, and neighboring Westmoreland County, where Jeannette is located about 25 miles east of the city.
