Sharon Speedway

HARTFORD — The Independent Insurance Agents of Trumbull County and Hovis Auto and Truck Supply will present the Truckin’ Thunder Night at Sharon Speedway Saturday.

Fred Sibley and Mike Charleton will bring their fire-breathing jet-powered trucks to the Trumbull County motorsports complex for exhibition runs, along with a double ‘car-burn meltdown’ to the death performance at intermission.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with the first race at 7 p.m.

Bagoly, Turocy selected

STRUTHERS — Jason Bagoly and Jared Turocy were named the Class B League co-players of the week.

Bagoly batted .667, going 10-for-15 with four doubles, five runs scored, and 10 RBIs.

This week he helped Rondinelli to a 4-1 record.

Bagoly was selected in the 40th round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies and will play at Kent State.

Turocy batted .588, going 10-for-17 with two doubles, three triples, four runs and four RBIs for the Astro Falcons (4-1).

He’s hitting .547, with five doubles, a league-leading nine triples, and a homer. Turocy is an Univ. of Akron recruit.

Speed camp set

YOUNGSTOWN — Stambaugh Stadium will hold a Sparq Rating-authorized speed and agility camp at noon Sunday for football players entering grades 9-12.

The one-day, non-contact camp stresses fundamentals and technique and is aimed at improving quickness. McCallister Scouting Service will observe all drills and Mark Porter of ScoutingOhio.com will also attend.

Greenwalt in action

TWIN RIVER, R.I. — Youngstown’s Billy Greenwalt (1-5) will fight in Rhode Island on July 17 at the Twin River Events Center.

Greenwalt is scheduled to meet Jay Holland (2-0) of Rhode Island in a four-round cruiserweight bout.

Greenwalt is trained by Terry Black of New Castle.

Most recently, Holland defeated Chris Boykins of Tampa, Fla.

Coaches hired

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield board of education has approved the following athletic supplemental contracts for the 2009-2010 school year: Randy Cameron, athletic director; Darren Garris, assistant athletic director; Joe Stevens, weightlifting coach; Ronald Toth, head varsity track coach; Andrew Apisa, assistant boys varsity track coach; and Frank Beck, ninth grade boys basketball coach.

Yo. Golf Association

POLAND — The Youngstown Golf Association’s first tournament was held Wednesday at Reserve Run.

The tournament was an individual stroke play qualifier for junior boys and girls ages 13–18 with two divisions: 13–15 and 16–18.

Trevor Jones of Poland was the overall winner with a round of one-under par 69.

The event was the first of four scheduled junior qualifiers that will be conducted by the YGA.

Bubon coaches golf

PITTSBURGH — Gabe Bubon was hired as the men’s and women’s golf coach at Point Park Univ.

Bubon is a 1995 graduate of Warren Harding High.

Bubon is also the assistant head men’s basketball coach at Point Park.

He played basketball there 1999-2000 and led the Pioneers in scoring.

Pirates send slumping Snell to minors

PITTSBURGH — Ian Snell, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ No. 2 starter, has been demoted to the minors after winning only once in his last 12 starts.

The former 14-game winner was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday to work on throwing more first-pitch strikes and improving his breaking ball.
