3rd Ward public meeting
YOUNGSTOWN — Councilman Jamael Tito Brown, D-3rd, is having a public meeting for 3rd Ward citizens at 5:30 p.m. today at Park Vista Gathering Room, 1216 Fifth Ave., to discuss crime prevention.
Police Chief Jimmy Hughes, city Prosecutor Jay Macejko and other law enforcement officials will discuss steps being taken to address crime and what citizens can do to protect themselves from crime.
Motorcycle crash
CANFIELD — A Leavittsburg man is recovering after a motorcycle crash Wednesday sent him to the hospital.
Phillip Sharp, 31, was westbound on U.S. Route 224 just before 9 a.m., where the Ohio State Highway Patrol said he was stopped at the traffic light at Route 224 and Fairground Boulevard. Police said a car traveling in the same direction and driven by 22-year-old Jace Melick, of Boardman, struck Sharp from behind.
Sharp was thrown from the bike, but because he was wearing a helmet, he sustained minor injuries, according to police. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for treatment. A condition report was not available Wednesday.
Melick was cited with failure to maintain an assured clear distance.
Camp applications
NEWTON FALLS — The Salvation Army, Newton Falls Service Unit, is accepting applications for children from age 6 to 12 to attend Camp NEOSA (North East Ohio Salvation Army), located near Carrollton.
The session will be from July 30 through Aug. 4. Participants will fish, swim, hike, study nature and make crafts at the free camp. The unit is able to send about 30 children.

Route 11 lane changes
COLUMBIANA — Northbound state Route 11 traffic will be shifted over into the southbound passing lane Monday for bridge repairs on two structures over the Norfolk Southern’s railroad in Fairfield Township, just north of the state Route 344 Interchange.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on the southbound lanes. Phase One of the project — work in the southbound lanes — began in January. ODOT’s contractor for the $4.4 million project is Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Co. of Youngstown. The completion date is Oct. 31.
Repaving at school
MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield Board of Education Wednesday approved repaving the high school student and teacher parking lots at a cost of $150,072. Bids were taken on the project by MS Consultants of Youngstown, and the contract was awarded to Diorio Paving Inc. of Girard. The board also approved adding varsity and junior varsity co-ed golf as a fall sport in the district for the 2009-10 school year and approved a salary of $3,433 for the varsity-junior varsity coach, who is yet to be named.
Park nights in Boardman
BOARDMAN — The township park’s family nights continue Saturday at the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre. The evening includes a music performance by Pipe Dreams, with the movie “Kung Fu Panda” being featured. All movies start at dark after the conclusion of the concert. Other events include Jocko the Clown, hayrides and rental bouncers. Food concessions will be available, and event attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs.
