Ohio lawmakers promote creation of state livestock board

COLUMBUS — Lawmakers moved quickly to finalize a

November ballot issue that would create a statewide board to set standards for livestock care.

The Ohio House adopted its version of the resolution today after a morning committee hearing, the first the legislation received in that chamber. The final floor vote was 84-13, and the resolution heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.

The Senate intends to adopts its version of the amendment Thursday.

The resolutions would ask voters in November to establish the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, a 13-member panel that would develop standards for biosecurity on farms, animal disease prevention, food safety and affordability and livestock care.
