Yankush cycles to Pa. win

PITTSBURGH — Jim Yankush of North Lima won last weekend’s Masters race at the Fort Cherry Cycling Road Race, a 40-mile journey with a hilltop finish.

Yankush also won the Masters 35+ Mill Creek Park USCF cycling event on June 6. Yankush is ranked number one in Ohio for Cat 3 Masters Men according

to the United States Cycling Federation and has won his last four races. Yankush races for the Mahoning Valley Cycling Team.

Boardman’s Fait ties for fifth

SOLON — Jake Fait of Boardman shot an 80 to tie for fifth place for boys ages 13-15 in a Northern Ohio PGA Junior event at Grantwood Park. Canfield’s Dominic Carano tied for seventh and Hubbard’s Justin Hallapy was ninth.

For girls ages 13-15, Poland’s Allison Mitzel shot an 88 to finish tied for fifth. North Jackson’s Chase Connors was seventh while Canfield’s Taylor Salreno was 12th.

Team Metro soccer

AVON LAKES — The Team Metro Soccer Club’s Boys U-18 team went undefeated to win the championship of the Avon Lakes Father’s Day Tournament.

Coached by Lou Cali and Kyle Schimley, the team went undefeated in pool play then beat Elite FC of Dayton 2-0 in the title contest.

The Team Metro U-19 Girls team, coached by Dan Houle, lost the championship game to the Ohio Strikers United.

Clement to be Butler coach

BUTLER, Pa. — Matt Clement, a right-hander who won 87 games during nine major league seasons, has been hired by alma mater Butler (Pa.) High School as its baseball coach.

Clement, 34, last pitched in the majors for Boston in 2006 before shoulder problems ended his career. He had his best season in 2005, going 13-6 with a 4.57 ERA for the Red Sox and making the AL All-Star team.

Clement won 10 or more games five times, going 14-12 for the Cubs in 2003. A former third-round draft pick by San Diego, he broke into the majors by winning his first two decisions for the Padres in 1998. He ended his career with an 87-86 record for the Padres, Cubs, Marlins and Red Sox.

Among the other finalists for the Butler High job was Mark Jula, the Center High School coach who was Clement’s basketball coach at Butler.

12 to be inducted into OSU hall of fame

Ohio State names 12 for Hall of Fame

COLUMBUS — Football players Neal Colzie, Andy Katzenmoyer and Dick LeBeau and basketball star Michael Redd are among the 12 athletes and coaches to be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.

The class will be inducted on Sept. 25 and introduced to the public at halftime of the home football game against Illinois the next day.

The list of inductees also includes: Robert Gary (cross country/track and field), Bob Hopper (swimming), Pandel Savic (football); Kaja Fiserova (rowing), Allison Hanna (golf), Vanessa Immordino (field hockey), Emma Laaksonen (ice hockey) and Jim Montrella (swimming coach).

Colzie (1972-74), Katzenmoyer (1996-98) and LeBeau (1956-58) all had successful NFL careers. Redd was a three-time Ohio State MVP and plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Yzerman, Hull named to Hall

Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Brian Leetch are going into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The selection committee announced on a conference call Tuesday it had elected the maximum four players this year. All were eligible for the first time.

Yzerman retired in the summer of 2006 with the sixth-highest point total in NHL history. The longtime Detroit Red Wings captain won the Stanley Cup three times and a gold medal with Canada in the 2002 Olympics.

Hull’s 741 goals rank third all-time, Robitaille’s 668 are the most by a left wing and Leetch is one of just five defensemen to have a 100-point season.

A player must be retired for three seasons before becoming eligible to enter the Hall. The induction ceremony will be Nov. 9.

New Jersey Devils president Lou Lamoriello was also elected in the builder category.
