Delivery driver robbed
WARREN — A female pizza-delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint Sunday evening of $3 cash, a cell phone and $36 in food in the Hampshire House apartment complex on Fifth Street Southwest.
The woman said a man pulled a gun and put it to her chest while taking her money and cell phone. Another man came to the passenger door of her vehicle and took the food, she said. The robbery took place about 10:15 p.m.
Art exhibit at Mill Creek
YOUNGSTOWN — A national art exhibit begins today at Mill Creek MetroParks.
The park system will feature the “Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art” exhibit at the Fellows Riverside Gardens. The exhibit features baskets from Charleston, S.C., and costal Georgia regions as well as regions in Africa.
The Museum of African Art organized the event, which will run through Aug. 9, and it tells the story of the Lowcountry coiled baskets that were born out of the era of slavery.
Dr. Dale Rosengarten, co-curator, and Nakia Wigfall, a fifth- generation weaver, will open the exhibit at 7 p.m. with a lecture and weaving demonstration.
Route 558 to be closed for culvert replacement
COLUMBIANA — State Route 558 in Fairfield Township will be closed Wednesday for a culvert replacement by Ohio Department of Transportation maintenance crews. The closure is just east of Bunker Hill Road intersection. Route 558 will be detoured onto state Route 164 south, to state Route 517 east, then back to Route 558. ODOT officials anticipate the road to be reopened later that day.
Planning commission
AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning County Planning Commission will meet at 1 p.m. today, in the commission conference room, 50 Westchester Drive.
Board approves budget
McDONALD — The board of education approved a temporary 2009-10 budget of $1.9 million to cover district expenses from July 1 to Sept. 30.
The amount is 25 percent of what the district spent for the entire 2008-09 school year, treasurer Thomas Radabaugh said Monday.
The board also hired a new high-school math teacher, Josh Camuso, under a one-year limited contract at a salary of $30,722. He will replace Donna Dolsak, who retired as high-school math teacher in June.
The board accepted a $150 donation from the McDonald Lions Club for the purchase of a computer-compatible printer for use by visually impaired students.
Soap Box Derby planned
SHARON, Pa. — Greater Pennsylvania Soap Box Derby is planned Saturday, beginning with a parade at 10 a.m.
East State Street from Stambaugh Avenue to Forker Boulevard will be closed for the parade and races, which are expected to end at 6 p.m.
Grant for rain garden
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District was awarded more than $3,500 in state grant money to install a rain garden.
The Ohio Environmental Protective Agency awarded the MSWCD $3,771 to build the rain garden at its Industrial Road headquarters as part of the Ohio Environmental Education Fund. The grant money was secured by the MSWCD and partners Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association, OSU Master Gardeners and the Mahoning Valley Solid Waste District Green Team. The partnership raised the required $7,500 for a 20 percent local match for the funding.
A rain garden is designed to filter rainwater, alleviate flooding and enhance the natural beauty of yards.
Stabbed with screwdriver
AUSTINTOWN — A township man is recovering after being stabbed with a screwdriver over the weekend.
Police said the William Grossen, 44, was assaulted at his residence in the 4600 block of New Road about 8 p.m. Sunday. Officers arrived at the apartment complex to find the victim in his kitchen bleeding from his head, neck and several other parts of his upper body. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and treated.
David Bagnoli, 43, who was staying with the victim, is charged with one count of felonious assault and was taken to the Mahoning County jail, the police report states.
Man exposes himself
BOARDMAN — A Canfield woman told police she was carrying her 3-year-old daughter about 3 p.m. Saturday, walking in the west lot of Macy’s at the Southern Park Mall, when a car pulled up next to her. She told police that she looked into the Buick and saw a white man, age 30 to 40, with dark hair and a small frame exposing himself inside the car. The car then fled, driving north through the parking lot.
