Akron officials review plan for so-called suicide bridge

AKRON (AP) — The city is moving closer to a safety upgrade meant to deter jumpers from what’s often referred to as the “Suicide Bridge.”

Akron will use $1.5 million in federal grants to erect 10-foot fencing along the outer edges of the span officially known as the “All-America Bridge,” or simply the Y-Bridge because it splits heading into downtown.

The medical examiner says there have been at least 28 suicides from the bridge in the past 12 years.

Akron City Council reviewed the plans Monday and voted to seek bids on the overall $9.8 million project, including structural improvements.
