Black American art exhibit begins Tuesday at Mill Creek MetroParks


YOUNGSTOWN — A national art exhibit begins Tuesday at Mill Creek MetroParks. The park system will feature the “Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art” exhibit at the Fellows Riverside Gardens. The exhibit features baskets from Charleston, S.C., and costal Georgia regions as well as regions in Africa.

The Museum of African Art organized the event, which will run through Aug. 9, and it tells the story of the Lowcountry coiled basket that were born out of the era of slavery.

Dr. Dale Rosengarten, co-curator, and Nakia Wigfall, a fifth- generation weaver, open the exhibit at 7 p.m. with a lecture and weaving demonstration.
