Renegades prevail

COLUMBIANA — The Crestview Renegades’ minor league football team prevailed against the Canton Hurricanes, 23-0, on Saturday in a Grassroots Football League game.

Ethan Russell from Beaver Local High led the Renegades’ offense by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another.

The defense dominated the game coming up with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and recorded a safety.

Russell threw the scoring passes to Corey Rauschenbach from Leetonia and Brian Warchol from Columbiana.

Jordan Reynolds (Crestview) kicked a field goal.

Ursuline High catcher Sarah Ingalls was first-team All-Steel Valley Conference and should have been listed with the other top SVC players in Sunday’s edition.

Garko held out

CHICAGO — Cleveland Indians first baseman Ryan Garko was out of the lineup against the Chicago Cubs Sunday because of a sprained left wrist.

Garko started two games after injuring himself Wednesday against Milwaukee, but left Saturday’s 6-5, 13-inning loss to the Cubs after the ninth because the pain was too severe.

He was available to pinch hit Sunday.

Garko, batting .253 with six home runs and 28 RBIs, hurt himself when he slipped while rounding second after hitting a game-tying, three-run double against the Brewers.

Steffes takes rodeo all-around title

CASPER, Wyo. — Nikki Steffes of the University of Wyoming won her second women’s all-around title at the College National Finals Rodeo.

Jake Wright from Western Texas College and Wyatt Smith from the University of Montana tied for first in the men’s all-around.

Steffes had a total of 395 points to claim her second championship in three years. She also won the all-around title in 2007.

Wright and Smith tied with 300 points. Wright competed in saddle bronc riding and bull riding, while Smith won the steer wrestling title.

Football bus collides

ANGOLA, Ind. — Officials say a tour bus carrying a semi-professional football team from Canada crashed into a sport utility vehicle in northeastern Indiana. One person is dead.

Angola Fire Department spokesman T.R. Hagerty says one person in the SUV was killed and 14 other people were injured in the crash reported about 11:40 a.m. EDT. Sunday.

Hagerty says the bus was carrying the London Silverbacks of London, Ontario. He says its passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious but none appeared life-threatening.

Twelve people were taken to an Angola hospital with minor injuries and two others were airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with serious injuries.

Fields stops Firtha

EDMONTON — Tye Fields knocked out Nicolai Firtha early in the sixth round of their heavyweight fight at the River Cree Resort and Casino.

Fields, a 6-foot-8, 264-pound southpaw, ended it with a straight left to the head that put Firtha on his back with 43 seconds gone in the round.

Fields (42-2, 38 KOs) was coming off a loss to Monte Barrett, but was by far the stronger of the two. He dominated from the start and dropped Firtha with a left late in the fifth round.

Fields won the first five rounds on all three judges’ scorecards.

The 6-foot-5 Firtha of Akron, Ohio, dropped to 16-6-1.

Tour of Switzerland

BERN, Switzerland — Fabian Cancellara won the Tour of Switzerland after a convincing victory in the race’s final stage.

Cancellara beat Tony Martin of Germany in Sunday’s 24-mile time trial to become the first Swiss rider since Alex Zuelle in 2002 to win the race. Cancellara is the Olympic time trial champion.

Martin finished 1 minute, 27 seconds behind in the race against the clock, with Thomas Dekker of the Netherlands placing third.

Cancellara finished 2 minutes, 2 seconds ahead of Martin in the overall standings.

Defending champion Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic was third overall, 2 minutes, 24 seconds behind.
