Gallery offers first student retrospective
NILES — The Art Outreach Gallery in the Eastwood Mall is hosting its first student retrospective. The show will run through Sept. 6. The exhibition, “A Work in Progress,” features Nikki Mehle, a Canfield High School senior.
Mehle has displayed her works in many local and regional shows, including her own show in July 2006 at Old North Church in Canfield. She has won awards in several county fairs and the Ohio State Fair. During her freshman year at Canfield High, Mehle received the Best of Show Award at the school’s annual art show. Her work has been recognized at the Mahoning County Art Show and she has received several Gold and Silver Key Awards at the Scholastic Art Show. Some of her pieces remain in private and permanent collections.
After graduation, Mehle plans to attend art school where she hopes to major in fine arts in painting. She is also considering a career in art therapy.
The gallery is located in the mall across from American Eagle Outfitters. Hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays, 1 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
Local man to compete in reality challenge
CANFIELD — Raymond Housteau of Canfield, former cast member of “The Amazing Race,” will join dozens of various celebrities and reality stars from other shows such as “Survivor,” “American Idol” and VH1’s “Rock Of Love” in a competition Thursday through June 28 to benefit the Kosair Children’s Hospital Christmas Fund, Louisville, Ky.
Proceeds will provide gifts for children hospitalized during Christmas and is sponsored by the Kentucky Police and Fireman’s Association.
Housteau will be a member of the “Amazing Race” team that will compete against teams from other reality shows in a competition at Six Flags Park in Kentucky.

Former Struthers man releases debut jazz CD
STRUTHERS — Dave Rivello, a native of Struthers, has released his first CD, “Facing the Mirror,” with his 12-piece band, The Dave Rivello Ensemble. Eight original compostions by Rivello are featured.
Rivello graduated from Youngstown State University in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in trumpet with jazz emphasis and music education. In 1989, he received a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary writing from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
He is a free-lance composer and arranger.
He is a staff arranger for Alfred Publishing Company and the Belwin Jazz Series and is an assistant professor of music of jazz studies at Eastman School, where he also directs the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble.
Healing power of music to be showcase
CLEVELAND — Cleveland Institute of Music Women’s Committee will present a special program, “Inner Harmony — Music and Its Healing Powers,” at noon Wednesday in Mixon Hall, 11201 E. Boulevard, Cleveland. The program will feature internationally renowned authority on the therapeutic uses of music, Dr. Deforia Lane, associate director of the Ireland Cancer Center and director of music therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ireland Cancer Center and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
