Diabetes series offered
YOUNGSTOWN — A three-week Dining with Diabetes series of classes is offered July 13, 20 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Senior Independence Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave.
The series, open to diabetics, their family members and caretakers, is sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County, Forum Health/Diabetes Help and The Senior Independence Center of Mahoning County.
The cost is $25. Preregistration is required. Call (330) 533-5538.
Participants will learn how to prepare meals that are healthful and easy to make, as well as receive up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise and how to understand diabetes-related medical tests. Recipe books and diabetes brochures will be provided.
Certification for center
HERMITAGE, Pa. — Sharon Regional’s Diabetes Center, 2395 Garden Way, has received the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate, which is symbolic of offering a quality diabetes self-management education program.
Grant for YWCA
YOUNGSTOWN — The YWCA of Youngstown has received a $146,000 grant from the federal budget for work force development, employment and training programs for disadvantaged citizens in the community.
Through the Workforce Development Project, the YWCA intends to partner with local government, businesses and training entities to provide work-readiness skills, job training and job coaching to increase the ability of participants to obtain employment and work toward self-sufficiency.
Services such as case management, job coaching and support will also be offered by the YWCA staff to ensure that individuals remain employed, YWCA officials said.
Accreditation for TMH
WARREN — Trumbull Memorial Hospital has received full Chest Pain Center Cycle II accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
The accreditation was awarded to the hospital for demonstrating expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting criteria established by the Society and completing on-site evaluations by a Society review team.
This is the second Chest Pain Center Accreditation earned by TMH.
Two awards for Magee’s
PITTSBURGH — Practice Greenhealth, a national membership association devoted to environmentally responsible health care, recently recognized Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC for its leadership in protecting the environment and patients and educating staff and parents about environmental health.
The hospital received the DEHP-Free Award and the Partner for Change Award. The DEHP-Free Award recognizes efforts to find safer alternatives for medical devices containing DEHP, a chemical used to soften plastics that is linked to birth defects and other illnesses. The Partner for Change Award recognizes health-care facilities that continuously improve their mercury elimination, waste reduction and pollution prevention programs.
Child-care center award
NEW MIDDLETOWN — St. Paul’s Child Care Center, 10143 Main St., has received a Two-Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services’ Bureau of Child Care and Development, the state agency responsible for licensing and promoting high standards among Ohio’s child-care programs.
Step Up To Quality is a voluntary rating system for early care and education programs. Participants can earn a one-, two- or three-star rating by meeting certain quality benchmarks.
