Future of bowling to be discussed

CANFIELD — The annual Greater Youngstown Bowling Association’s delegates meeting is scheduled for June 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Amron Lanes.

The meeting is open to all members of GYBA will cover old business and its future operation.

AJGA Junior at New Castle C.C.

BRASELTON, Ga. — The American Junior Golf Association will head to New Castle Country Club in New Castle, Pa., July 13-16, for the AJGA Junior at New Castle. The 54-hole stroke play event will boast 99 of the nation’s top junior golfers, ages 12-18.

The AJGA will conduct the tournament for the seventh consecutive year in New Castle. In 2008, Gregor Orlando of Erie, Pa., and Rachel Rohanna of Waynesburg, Pa., took top honors in their respective divisions.

A portion of the 99-player field will be reserved for players earning entry via the 18-hole K-12 qualifier, which will have a 2 p.m. shotgun start at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course, July 12.

A tournament practice round will be held at the New Castle Country Club on July 13, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Call (770) 868-4200.

Gamble, Ward are Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Poland’s Brittany Gamble and Salem’s Alli Ward will play voleyball for Westminster College.

Gamble, a libero, earned three letters at Poland for head coach Fred Smith. She was captain during her senior year while earning honorable mention in the All-American Conference Red Tier

Ward was a two-time Columbiana County All-Star who earned first-team all-District I honors in 2008 for Salem coach Don Conser. She also earned first-team honors for the All-American Conference Red Tier.

Speedway session now on Tuesday

HARTFORD — Sharon Speedway has rescheduled its open practice session for Tuesday.

Practice time will be available to any car, even if the class does not compete weekly at Sharon.

Pit admission costs $15. Spectator admission in the main grandstand area is free. A refreshment stand will be open in the pits, but there will be no service in the spectator area.

In case of inclement weather, the practice session will be rescheduled for Wednesday.

Sharon Speedway is located at the intersection of Ohio routes 7 and 305.

Steelers sign TE Johnson

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed tight end David Johnson, their seventh-round draft pick, to a three-year contract.

Johnson’s contract means the Steelers have now signed seven of their nine picks from the NFL draft in April.

Johnson was the Steelers last pick in the draft. He caught 22 passes for 356 yards and five touchdowns during his final season at Arkansas State.

First-round pick Evander Hood and third-rounder Kraig Urbik are still unsigned.

The Steelers open training camp July 31.

CHL’s RM Rage sitting out a season

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — The Central Hockey League says the Rocky Mountain Rage are suspending operations for next season, with hopes of competing in the 2010-11 season.

Its players are now free agents.

Management for the minor league team in Broomfield says it is working on reorganizing the business and completing a new ownership agreement and a long-term lease agreement with the Broomfield Event Center, where it plays its games.
