BOARDMAN — Maureen Dee will be the featured speaker when the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown meets July 2 at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St. Dee, assistant executive director of Catholic Charities Services in Cleveland, will speak on “Issues Related to Alcohol/Chemical Dependency and How the Spiritual Life Helps.”

New assignment

YOUNGSTOWN — Bishop George V. Murry has appointed the Rev. Gregory Fedor as pastor of St. Joseph Church in Austintown effective July 15.

Ordained June 18, 1983, Father Fedor completed seminary studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati. After ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Paul Church in North Canton, catechist and associate principal at Cardinal Mooney High School and administrator at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Vienna. He was appointed pastor at St. Mary Church in Orwell in 1998 and pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Rock Creek in 2002, in addition to his pastorate at St. Mary.

Father Fedor has served as a representative to the Ohio Bishops’ Advisory Council of the Catholic Conference of Ohio. He also serves as a diocesan consultor and member of the Priests Council.

Church anniversary

YOUNGSTOWN — New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will celebrate its 85th anniversary with special services at 10:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. June 28.

At the late-afternoon service, the Rev. Dennis Garner, choirs and congregation of Tabernacle Baptist Church will be special guests.

The theme is “Walking in the Promise and Power of the Divine in 2009.”

The Rev. Lonnie K.A. Simon was called to pastor in 1962 and retired after 33 years. His son, the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon, became pastor in 1995.

Ground was broken for the new church Sept., 22, 2002 and the new facility was dedicated Feb. 8, 2004.

Lecture series

YOUNGSTOWN — The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has announced the inaugural lecture of the Bishop Benedict C. Franzetta Memorial Lecture Series. The series, established by Bishop George V. Murry on Feb. 6, is designed to further the church’s mission of evangelization.

Bishop Franzetta served as auxiliary bishop of Youngstown from Sept. 4, 1980 until his retirement Sept. 4, 1996.

He died Sept. 26, 2006 at the age of 85.

The Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk, Archbishop of Cincinnati, will speak on the topic “The Church: The One and the Many.” The event will take place in two locations in the diocese — at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel social hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel in Youngstown, and at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at Barrette Center at Walsh University in Canton.

St. John Chrysostom

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown-Warren Chapter of the Society of St. John Chrysostom will meet at 11:30 a.m. June 27 in St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., to pray for the unity of apostolic churches.

The group will leave the cathedral and march to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 220 N. Walnut St., where the prayer for unity will be repeated.

Chapter members also are asked to observe a day of fast for unity Friday in preparation for the march and for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the Holy Apostles on June 29.

In the Eastern Church, the Apostles Fast begins on the second Monday after Pentecost and continues until the Feast Day.

Summer series

COLUMBIANA — Zion Hill Church of the Brethren 14550 New Buffalo Road, will conduct an all-church sing at 6 p.m. June 28. This is the second of five summer concerts for the community.

Summer camp

YOUNGSTOWN — New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will have a summer camp, Christ Has Annointed Me Personally for Service, for 5- to 12-year-olds from June 29-Aug. 7. Sessions are held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The cost is $65. Call (330) 747-2125.
