Black bear rambles across southwest Ohio

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A roaming black bear has been spotted twice at a Girl Scout camp in Warren County in southwest Ohio, where bears are seldom seen.

Authorities say the bear sighted Tuesday and Wednesday is probably the same one that has been reported at least a dozen times in several southern Ohio counties and keeps moving farther west and south.

Officials at Camp Butterworth say they notified parents of girls staying at the camp near Maineville, and a ranger contacted Ohio wildlife authorities.

The girls were told to get rid of any food items that might attract a bear, and were relocated to more secure lodges and kept in large groups during activities.

Bear sightings are common in southeastern Ohio but rare on the other side of the state.
