LAKE MILTON — The Nature and Arts Stage at Lake Milton State Park will be dedicated at 1 p.m. Friday. The stage is located just north of the swim beach and is accessible by car or boat. ‘Summer solstice Native American style’

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — Unity Community Centre, 1226 Naylor-Lloyd Road, will celebrate “Summer Solstice Native American Style” this weekend. The summer solstice, the first day of summer and longest day of the year, is Sunday.

A movie and discussion on the American Indian experience will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The event is free; an offering will be taken.

Saturday activities will begin at 9 a.m. The program for adults starts with two films on the Paleo and “Cliff Dweller” Indians and a discussion led by Dr. Jack Nichols, formerly of Slippery Rock University. The afternoon also includes a discussion on “Women in the Native American Culture,” “The History of the Summer Solstice in Native America Society” and “Native American Drumming.” There will be a lesson in American Indian drumming for adults at 4 p.m.

For children, morning activities include learning an American Indian alphabet (to make secret code), power bracelets and creating picture stories. Afternoon activities will be bracelet making, a film and learning the snake dance. The day will culminate with a concert at 6 p.m. by the Lakota Indian Drum group. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The cost includes lunch and materials. Reservations are requested; call (330) 539-0122.

Free movies at Covelli

YOUNGSTOWN — The city of Youngstown has brought back free movie Mondays at the Covelli Centre, formerly the Chevrolet Centre. Movies begin at sundown. Those attending should take blankets or lounge chairs. The schedule is: “Iron Man,” June 29; “Jaws,” July 6; “Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” July 13; “Sixteen Candles,” July 20; “The Family That Prays;” “Madagascar 2,” Aug. 3; “Disturbia,” Aug. 10; “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Aug. 17; “Enchanted,” Aug. 24; and “The Incredible Hulk,” Aug. 31. Touch of the Moon will sell old-fashioned candy and popcorn.

BWR workshops to start

YOUNGSTOWN — Ballet Western Reserve’s summer intensive workshops will start Monday and continue through July 18, and there are still openings available.
