Youngstown man shot in hip while crossing street

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said an Idora Avenue man was shot in the hip as he walked across the street in the 500 block of West Evergreen Avenue.

James A. Jones, 24, appeared to be hit once in the right hip and was listed in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Hospital authorities said Monday they have no further information to report on Jones.

Police said Jones and his girlfriend, a 25-year-old Campbell woman, had just parked their car and were walking across the street around 6:45 p.m. Sunday when they heard three or four gunshots.

Jones was on the sidewalk when he was hit and tried to run back to his car but collapsed on a lawn, police said.

That’s where investigating officers found him. He was conscious and able to tell police that he didn’t know who shot him.

Jones’ brother, Lamont Jones, was also at the scene and told police he saw three men standing at the corner of West Evergreen and Summer Street, one of them carrying a handgun.

After the gunfire, the three men walked south on Summer, Lamont Jones told police.

Investigating officers said they found two spent shell casings at the corner described by the witness.
